We drove into Aramac looking for the Big Red Roo but it was not where it shows on the map, we dropped in to the Tramway Museum for a look before filling out tanks and searching for the Big Red Roo again on our way towards Lake Dunn.
We once again stopped to take pics of the Sculptures.

Having completed the Lake Dunn Sculpture Trail circle we headed towards Aramac and pulled up to camp at Horsetailer’s Gorge and checked out some of the caves there.
Tomorrow we will try again to find the Big Red Roo and apparently there is a new sculpture recently added in town so we will try and find that also, in the meantime we are relaxing around the campfire again.

Thursday 15th July:

It was a warm night so we were both up at dawn and walked along the Gorge checking out some of the caves, some were quite interesting.
One had a strange looking chimney through its roof and also a bee’s nest in the ceiling.
We headed back to camp and packed up then hit the road back to Aramac where we found the new sculpture out on Racecourse Road.

We then drove out the Muttaburra road several Kms and finally found the remaining sculpture.
Big Red Roo.

With that safely tucked under our belt we drove to Muttaburra and started our search for the Geographical Centre of Queensland.
First try was following Google Maps direction 1 but it took us into a paddock at least 10 Kms from the point.
We tried up the road a bit but option 2 took us into a creek bed.
We returned to Muttaburra and tried option 3 but it took us to a gate about 10 km away.
Option 4 took us to Tragowel where we spoke to the lady there who said there was no access via there and to speak to Fiona at the shop.
We drove back to Muttaburra but the first shop was the wrong one so we tried the servo and found the right lady.
She tried to ring Lindsay but there was no answer so she directed us to Angora Park but he was out.
Access is through Verastan which Lindsay manages so we didnt manage to get access and had to give up.

We headed Northwest along black soil plains with nothing much to see but dust until we hit the bitumen then called in to Mount Walker Lookouts for a look.

We drove through Hughenden on to the Basalt Byway and followed the rough dirt road for a while with nothing much to see until we left that route and pulled up to camp beside the extremely wide, dry sandy bed of the Flinders River.
It was a hot night but the fire was still a welcome spot to relax.

Friday 16th July:

Last Night was 23 degrees when I went to sleep at 9:30 pm and just before dawn was 21 degrees so wasn’t the most comfortable sleep which is why we were up early and hit the road early.

Image

A couple of missing roads were encountered before we were back on the bitumen.

A pretty boring drive through Richmond, Juliet Creek and Cloncurry on the main Highway.
Brett and I were both amazed at how many Caravans and campers were on the road … at least double what there were of cars and trucks put together.
We stopped at Chinaman Creek Dam for a look before heading towards Mt Isa and both noticed hardly any caravans anymore now that we were in the mountainous terrain.

Image

Image

Image

About half way to the Isa we turned off and drove the 24 Km out to Fountain Springs stopping at Rosebud Weir for a look along the way.

Image

We set up camp near the base of Fountain Springs and intended on having a swim but the water was like ice.
I checked the temp on the surface and it was 12.7 degrees although a hell of a lot colder below but my thermometer is not waterproof so couldn’t check any deeper than 100mm.
The water coming out of the spring was 27.1 degrees so I had to just have a bucket wash.

We had the place to ourselves which makes it even more special and someone had left some wood behind so we didn’t need to scrounge much up for our fire and BBQ.

It really is an awesome campsite nestled in amongst the Gum trees at the base of the falls beside a crystal clear waterhole.

Image

Image

The actual spring is just above the right hand side of the waterhole ... the waterfall only runs after heavy rain.
