Western Lost City 23-7-2021

Post by Big Red »

Friday 23rd July 2021:
This report is part of the North West Qld trip. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=50
I was camped at the Southern Lost City and awoke to a faint colour on the horizon but as the light increased it became apparent that I had a grey sky due to heavy fog.

Image

I wondered if I should wait for another day before heading out to the Western Lost City but decided to head out and get some pic of the spires in the mists thinking that might be cool.

I picked up the lock code from the Rangers office white board at the old Nathan River Homestead which is now the Rangers Office for Limman National Park in the Gulf of Carpentaria. and headed out the rough and rugged 28 km 4wd track but about 10 minutes from the end of the track the fog lifted and was replaced by perfect blue skies as I came in sight of the formations.
I was sort of disappointed and sort of glad at the same time.

I took an amazing video while crawling along in the car ...

I drove out to the Arch [which they have now fenced off] and had a coffee while enjoying the scenery.

After a lot of pics I wandered off trying to find the Art site [which was just near the end of the track 8 years ago] but then realised they had stopped the track short and fenced it off.

I veered off to the right between the “Little Ayers Rock” and the “Triangle Arch”, skirted round behind the large isolated rock formation and found the art in the Alcove behind it.

More pics happened but they were in half sun half shade so not real good.

I set off to try and find the “Dragonfly Tunnel” and spotted it not long after.

I climbed up over the range and down the other side to the other end of the tunnel and squirmed my way back through.
I tried hard to get a decent pic of one of the Dragonflies but its very dark in there and they take off at the first movement.

Once out side I headed across to the other end of the circular range to “Kissing Rock” before making my way back to “The Arch” and something to eat and drink.

Another visitor arrived in a Prado, they parked behind me blocking me in then put up their awning and donned sunscreen, long sleeve shirts, buckets hats etc then walked in to the little alcove behind the arch, stated “is that it?” then packed up and drove back out !!

I told them about the rock art but as there was no guided walk they weren’t interested … takes all kinds!

After a bit of a relax to let the sun move I headed back the 600 to 800 metres to the Art site and found it in complete shade so much easier to get the pics.

I headed back to the car and took more pics before cooking up some sausage sangers for dinner then headed out again for sunset pics but the angle and all the trees were all wrong so not worth doing.
When i went to leave the Alternator light stayed on and i didn't want to run out of headlights on the way out and couldn't see what was wrong under torch light so slept the night in the car.
