I walked out to the lookout where there is the whole top cap of a dome balanced on the edge with a sheer drop beneath half of it … if someone stood on it I reckon it would tip into the canyon.
I next did the Garden of Eden, not much water in the pool and a tour group turned up so I get out of there pretty quick.
As I got to the half way point I crossed a bridge with a gate on it but on the back of the gate it says you are not allowed through and you have to turn back … a bit weird!!
The water was flowing at Running Waters but the rest of the Finke River only had a few waterholes.
I stopped at the old Police station ruins which has more structure than when I saw it 18 years ago … looks like someone has built the fireplace.
I stopped above Boggy Hole at a campsite I used back then but access has been cut so I had coffee and something to eat then carried on to Hermannsberg where I dropped in to see Andy and Di before making camp in the Finke River Bed.
Monday 1st July:
The weather is a little bit warmer but it still took over half an hour to boil enough water for 1 coffee.
I pumped the tyres up to highway pressure then struggled a bit to drive back down the sandy bed of the river then hit the bitumen to Alice Springs where I added some more biocide to the fuel tanks then filled up and drove up to the Plenty Highway where I turned East and drove on past Harts Range where the bitumen stopped and I lowered pressures again.
Not long after I turned North passing Mt Swan station and dropped in to Tower Rock for a good look around, naturally you have to climb to the top to experience the magic views of the surrounding flat countryside.
The Boulder strewn hills are very much like the Devils Marbles.
With that done and quite a few hours of daylight left along with the abundance of flies, I decided to head North, then East, then South to the Boxhole Meteorite Crater.
I like this one better as it’s a lot more remote and unenhanced compared to Wolf Creek Crater, nowhere near as big or as deep though and it looks like you could drive around the rim with a bit of bush mowing down as there are wheel tracks around it.
You could camp along the rim also going by the fire places.
