Thursday 11-8-22
By dawn I was on my way back out and found the tree across the road had been cut out of the way.
I headed north then out to the Pennefather River by following the rough and rolly track in the dunes.
I pulled up in a pretty nice spot for a while apart from the loads of rubbish washed up on the beach. The trispike burrs where a constant menace on the vegetation though.
The wind whipping up the sand annoyed me so I headed north to the Pennefather river mouth for a look then back to a “shortcut” which went as usual [rolls eyes]
Back out on the main road I drove up as far as Clough Landing before deciding the extra distance to Mapoon and back was probably not worth it so turned around and headed for Stone Crossing.
I took a “shortcut” but a few dozen trees across the track slow the trip considerably … You’d think I would have learnt by now!
The road actually tuned to bitumen after a while but the potholes are truly something to write home about.
I pulled up on the bank above the Crossing and walked down to check it out. Was going to walk it but the current is too strong so I had to design my course from the rocks.
It looks like a deep hole just past the rocks but I spotted a rock shelf so I think I can head upstream a car length to get around the hole, the rest doesn’t look so deep but its a bit hard to tell.
Where I stopped was a nice looking spot so might camp here for a bit before continuing North.
Friday 12-8-22:
Well it appears that I should have crossed yesterday when I arrived at 1PM as when I woke this morning the tide had backed up the waters and the level had risen about half a metre and was still rising … oh well, looks like I’ll have to stay camped here in this great spot for a lot longer
It appears that the tide turned at 7:30 am approximately 4 1/4 hrs after Weipa at 3:17 ... or 4 3/4 hours after Cullen Point at Mapoon at 2:42 ... so my next low at Weipa will be 12:13 and my next low at Cullen Point will be at 11:12 so the lowest point here will be at 16:30 – 16:00 … hmmm, just noticed some weird little half low tides happening at Weipa and more so at Cullen so will have to take times with a grain of salt.
About 4 hours after High tide at Stone Crossing it was as low as it gets so I headed off after 5 Landrovers [one had a camper] had crossed earlier following my line suggestion and 4 Toyotas pulling campers were discussing what lines to take.
I had a bit of a hard time steering as the power steer belt was slipping in the water but made it through no problems.
I didn’t want to get stuck behind all those campers so found the new track which avoids the nature reserve and scooted off.
