We drove up to Honeymoon Beach for a look then hit the road south and had a meal and camped at Drysdale River Station.

Monday 6th August
We had a very late start today as we had to wait until they opened up for fuel and people were lined up half an hour in advance.
We topped up and hit the road south and had a pretty good run with traffic to the turn off.

We then turned East and had a pretty good run although the corrugations were noticeably worse than 9 days ago.
At one stage I was first car through on the freshly graded road so it was as smooth as silk but that was not a good thing as one of the freshly turned sharp rocks sliced through a sidewall...After all we had been through and only a hundred odd Kms from the end of the dirt I get a puncture on one of the best bits of road we had travelled on for the entire trip!!
We lunched at the Durack River again then made it through to the El Questro turn off and pumped up the tyres as it was bitumen from here on.

We drove into Kununurra and did a bit of shopping before I headed out to Ivanhoe Crossing while Jeff went to the Hoochery then met me out there. We drove a couple of Kms down along the river and camped near a large pool where I spotted a croc eyeing us off.
Needless to say we had our campfire between us and the water.

Tuesday 7th August
We were up before dawn again and I could see the red eyes out on the main lagoon not too far from us; the light from the torch frightened the fish close to shore making a lot of splashing but Mr Croc was not going to have us for breakfast.
We headed in to town and refuelled then headed East for a couple of hours before stopping to have Breakfast … a Crocodile Pie !! lol
We refuelled again in Katherine then headed south stopping at Bitter Springs for a soak then kept going to Daly Waters for a meal before camping out at the Stuart Tree.

Wednesday 8th August
I got up and checked out the sign behind our Utes, it said we were at the old telegraph station ruins but all I could see was two concrete steps and a sea of long grass so I walked over to the Stuart tree which apparently has a large “S” carved into it … couldn’t really make that out either.
I drove down to the Township and took a few pics then we headed off as the sun peeked over the horizon.

It was a long boring bitumen drive with a stop for iced coffee then a stop for iced coffee and a refuel then a stop for iced coffee and lunch at Barkly Homestead

then finally pulling up a little early at Camooweal where we found a spot at the Billabong just before town.
A Kite hovered around our camp on a secluded Peninsula and several times flew about 3 metres above Jeff sitting in his chair.
Three Brolgas were fishing at the end of the Peninsula along with a stork and several ducks.
The pigs had made a real mess of the shoreline but it was still a pleasant spot to camp.

Thursday 9th August
Another day, another dawn and we were off on the boring bitumen again.
We refuelled at Mt Isa then more of the same until Longreach where Jeff made camp while I left him and refuelled then did a detour and drove to Emerald to visit my parents who are looking after a place up there for a couple of months.
Was good to sit around the fire for a few hours catching up with them.

Friday 10th August
I was up at first light as usual … but went back to bed for another hour until the sun had warmed up.
We had breakfast and I got the guided tour of the place then after lunch I hit the road again.
The road was a lot rougher than it looked and I kept thinking there was something wrong with the shocks although I was going pretty quick … even had a cop going the other way indicate to me to slow down but he must have been on his way back to knock off so didn’t chase me 
I refuelled at Roma then KFC’d and hit the road East to catch up with Jeff again.
I saw that he was camped at Gil Weir so set off to find him.
He didn’t know I was coming, it was after dark and I just pulled up beside his car and stopped … he was thinking “the nerve of some people” when I stepped into the light … lol
